Josh & John’s Ice Cream Rebrand

A mock rebrand for Josh & John’s Ice Cream. Imagining a neon sign for the ice cream shop, I put the business’s name in the shape of ice cream and utilized bright colors to appeal to a younger audience. The final result is fun and playful with a touch of modern elegance, elevating the branding and giving it new life while maintaining their existing brand personality.

Research and Original Branding

Josh & John’s is a Colorado handmade ice cream chain and their personality is playful, but I found their logo to be lackluster and missing some excitement and intrique. Researching their product photography online, I noticed a use of sprinkles and the classic “cherry on top.” That, along with their existing use of neon signs in-store got my wheels turning for this rebrand.

Type Manipulation

Starting with the bold, rounded, and friendly Cooper Black typeface, I manipulated the letterforms into an ice cream shape, making it look melty like ice cream on a warm day. This design allows for customers to see the logo and identify the products Josh & John’s sells.

Manual Neon Effect

Drawing inspiration from their existing use of neon signs, I created a manual neon effect by layering strokes of different colors and opacities, maintaining the integrity of the vector shapes and allowing it to be scaled. The bottom layer is thickest and least opaque, the middle layer is slightly thinner and more opaque in the same color as the bottom layer, and the top layer is thinnest, white and completely opaque.

New Logo

The new, reimagined logo feels fun and fresh “with a cherry on top!” staying true to the playful Josh & John’s personality and their handmade products. The black elevates the branding and makes it feel more refined while maintaining the friendly and welcoming atmosphere Josh & John’s has cultivated over the years.

Sticker Designs

Stickers are a fantastic way to increase brand visibility, and Josh & John’s is already in the practice of offering stickers for their patrons to purchase and display their love for homemade ice cream. The new neon branding lends itself well to create eye-catching sticker designs!
